Airdrie sprung the surprise of the day in this local derby. For the second time in the league this season they took full points off their disgruntled neighbours. Not only that, they were well worthy of the win.
Two goals with the game only 16 minutes old meant Clyde's fate was sealed. Their manager, Billy Reid, to his credit took immediate action in a vain attempt to redress the balance.
Making his tactical change meant replacing Gary Bollan and Simon Mensing moving to the left. Now with three up front, Reid was looking for an immediate result.
It didn't come, and Airdrie continued to dominate with Alan Gow having an outstanding match.
The early goals came first from top scorer and now assistant manager Owen Coyle. He is always a threat round the box, a predator still in spite of his years. So, when Mark Roberts headed back across goal from Willie McLaren's cross, Coyle dived low to direct the ball past the helpless Bryn Halliwell.
In a classic case of role reversal, the second goal came from a Coyle cross and Roberts nipped in at the back post to head powerfully home.
Airdrie started the second half strongly and defender Neil McGowan had a great chance to score. His shot, though, was wild.
However, number three arrived after 75 minutes and it came from Gow who was having a great game.Timing his run to perfection he beat the offside trap and ran on to a fine pass from Coyle. Sprinting 20 yards with Scott Wilson breathing down his neck, the Airdrie striker waited until he was on the edge of the box before unleashing a thunderous shot that beat Halliwell easily.
Clyde were due a consolation goal and it came nine minutes from time. The home defence went to sleep for the first time in the day and allowed substitute Alex Walker a free shot on goal. His effort looked to take a deflection and Lee Hollis was beaten for the first time in the match.
